Within a few years, there will be no ofice space or rez. space left on Manhattan, so I'd be shocked if the plan were downsized or cancelled, which is not going to happen. You will not be able to recognize the skyline when everything is completed.

You will not be able to recognize the skyline when everything is completed. Do you consider this a good thing or a bad thing? I consider it a good thing on all acounts.

I love NY buildings and construction so I can't wait. With all of these mega-projects, it's almost like building half of the Chicago skyline on Manhattan Island. Have you ever seen the midtown skyline from Jersey? It's the largest cluster of skyscrapers in the world, and it's only half of NY's skyline. When these projects are complete, the midtown skyline will extend itself another mile south, closer to the downtown skyline, which is getting a new Trade Center. The midtown and downtown skylines are seperated by what I call "the gap;" one day, NYC won't have the gap. I don't know how to explain the size of this boom. It's bigger than the boom that gave us the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, bigger than anything NY has seen. It's going to produce a lot of post-modern iconic towers, a new section for the skyline. Midtown 2006: Downtown 2011: By the year 2020, the two skylines could touch at one point. The most important element of NY is the buildings. Top American Skyscraper Cities 2007 (Number of completed buildings with over 50 floors): 1- New York: 75 2- Chicago: 45 3- Houston: 12 4- Los Angeles: 10 | Dallas: 10 (Tie) 5- Atlanta: 8 By the year 2011, New York City will have over 200 buildings over 500 feet tall, and over 100 buildings with over 50 floors, the most in the world. On September 12, 2001, they said not another skyscraper would ever be built.

Wow - this is really great, this construction will all be happening around the time most of our members end up moving. What an exciting time to be a New Yorker!

Most of the next generation of Manhattanites will be living in the residential areas created by these projects. Without these new developments, there would be no room for you. These new developments mark the start of a new era for the city.

It's amazing how much New York sucks. NYS officials have dropped plans for the new twin towers of Moynihan Station and have decided to spread out retail/resi space in the area around the station, which just makes congestion problems, what everyone wants to avoid. I'm going to ask my friend if the project is really dead and if the people who decided to drop the towers have enough power to do it. In conclustion, New York sucks big time. You can't get anything accomplished because of dicks in high positions (AND WHAT THE HELL DO THEY KNOW ABOUT CITY PLANNING!?!) on the state and because of stupid laws. NYC needs to become it's own state badly. F**k New York, f**k em, f**k em'!

Wow, and I thought that only medium-sized Florida cities like Jacksonville had to deal with these issues....

Phew, the project ain't dead yet. Yep, it happens everywhere. The main reason why MEGAprojects like the Empire State Building, World Trade Center, and New World Trade Center are/were/will be erected is because they all had lot of support from NYS officials; for example, three govs. of NY have all supported those three projects with their lives because it's a matter of pride. ["I had those towers erected!"] I hope Spitzer backs these new towers.

I waz wrong! The project is still alive. I've seen a massing for a skyscraper with a roof height of over 1,700 feet into the sky. I wonder if they'll go for something that big.
Merrill Lynch, the financial giant, has given every indication that it plans to build a $4 billion plus, 3 million-square-foot-plus tower on Seventh Avenue. The new tower would have significantly more square footage than the Freedom Tower, the city's largest building.
MSG/WS Centerpiece - 1,700'+ Freedom Tower - 1,776' WTC Tower 2 - 1,354' MSG Site Tower I - 1,300'+ Penn East Site - 1,250'+ WTC Tower 3 - 1,255' Empire State Building – 1,250’ Merrill Lynch Tower - approx. 1,200' MSG Site Tower II - 1,100'+ Bank of America Tower - 1,200' 80 South Street - 1,123' New York Times Tower - 1,046' Chrysler Building – 1,046’ Sunflower Tower - 1,000' WTC Tower 4 – 1,000'
And I'm sure there will be at least six more skyscrapers over a thousand feet tall by 2018.
