To me, there's no such thing as "feminine" or "masculine". Maria, that's very idealist of you, but honestly, it's hard to deny that there are feminine and masculine traits...

Like what?
I argue with my brother about this kind of stuff all the time. My brother has the Nickelodeon standpoint: all girls talk way too much about "girly stuff", and it's impossible for guys to totally understand a girl. So I tell him: if a girl was talking and rambling on about your favorite video games, you'd understand every word, wouldn't you?
I think that the only MAIN differences are well... biological things...

male archetype: not very emotionally sensitive, like sports, video games, don't care about their appearance, aren't affected by verbal abuse, better at athleticness, very concerned about being "tough" and want to be the best at everything, more concerned with the physical than the mental/emotional.
female archetype: very concerned about their looks, smarter (sorry guys), especially when it comes to subtlety, physically weak, more refined, appreciate the arts, very sensitive, more mature, more concerned about the emotional/mental than the physical.
Anyway, that's how I see it. I think everyone has a certain balance of these traits in them.

Well, I don't consider myself an overly sensitive person, but pretty much all of that describes me...

There's nothing wrong with that. I'm not that obsessed with my looks, I think dressing like a dude is so much fun, and my voice part is a few notes away from tenor.
I call you gay all the time, but that's just cuz it's fun. =P Feminine guys can be awesome, as can masculine girls.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, Swoosh.
I don't "think it's okay for guys to be girly and girls to be masculine", I just eliminate the stereotypes all together and support people BEING THEMSELVES.
Does that make sense?

So I tell him: if a girl was talking and rambling on about your favorite video games, you'd understand every word, wouldn't you? Well, the important thing to note here is that your example, video games, is something that many girls AREN'T PRONE TO LIKING. Maybe it's a pyschological thing or something that's enforced by society, but the fact still remains that the girl to guy ratio in terms of liking video games is probably 1:10. Of course, a trip around the internet will show you that there are many "fangirls" who love certain video games. Okay, fair enough - I still wouldn't consider it enough to throw off my ratio, but there is a large group of female gamers. But let's take a look at what kind of games girls and guys like in general: Girls: adventures, RPGs, puzzle games Guys: action, shoot 'em ups, racing So, using those generalizations, we can rule that a lot of guys, if not all, are more apt to enjoy violent and/or adrenaline-pumping experiences. Right?

Basically, guys like to play games with good gameplay and graphics. girls like to play games that have a good plot, cool gameplay, a fantasy setting (usually), and at least one prettyboy. =P
CounterStrike is fun, but LoZ and Okami are on a totally 'nother level.
See, you can gender-stereotype everything! : D
Puzzle games suck though. I hated Myst, and that's supposed to be a"girl's game".

So, using those generalizations, we can rule that a lot of guys, if not all, are more apt to enjoy violent and/or adrenaline-pumping experiences. Right? But what about those tomboy girls? What if a girl loves all of that stuff? Or what if a guy hates all of that? Maybe a girl likes those "adrenaline rushes" from different things like scary movies, roller coasters, things like that...

Maria, ultimately, I think you're right - there are no differences between males and females (besides the obvious) - or at least, there didn't used to be.
The problem is, gender sterotypes have been around since near the beginning of time, so many of them are hardwired and deeply embedded into our culture and our very minds. So masculine/feminine traits are really a matter of very complex physchology...

Tori <3's all video games. I'm SUCH a tom boy. Like, if people call Swoosh gay cause he's girly, then I'm a lesbian. Which I'm not. And I like being a tom boy. I'm not gonna change because of stereotypes. ROCK ON!

Actually, I really don't consider either of you overly manly, I always saw you both as mildly girly...

Yeah, I know. Well, I actually consider myself more toward the middle than anything. I just like the phrase "manly man". Here are some gender quizzes: (I know they're just internet crap, but it's still interesting) www.okcupid.com/tests/takeI scored 59% femininity, 44% masculinity, and 46% uncertainty. community.sparknotes.com/gender/page2.repl (I think youhave to sign up for this, but it's free) We are 8% you are a man! There are 27% more male than you — 6% like you — and 66% more female than you . www.blogthings.com/whatgenderisyourbrainquiz/Your Brain is 53% Female, 47% Male Your brain is a healthy mix of male and female You are both sensitive and savvy Rational and reasonable, you tend to keep level headed But you also tend to wear your heart on your sleeve www.bellaonline.com/misc/quiz/female/Just taking into account the Females who took this quiz, your choices are the same as 70% of the Females! If instead we compare you to the Males who took this quiz, your choices are the same as 68% of the Males! You appear to be much more like the typical Females than the typical Males! www.pbs.org/pov/pov2003/georgiegirl/special_quiz_r4.htmlYou're A Gender Outlaw! Honey, you're too far gone to make the climb back up to "real" man or "real" woman. Your next step would be to let yourself explore some of the places that really thrill you, no matter the social taboos. Just be kind and compassionate when you're doing it, okay? ^ok, that's ever-so-slightly disturbing. I think these are really interesting. So, slightly girly then. =)
