She's called the "Sunflower Tower;" she will be over a thousand feet tall and one of the top 20 tallest buildings in NY. They are preping the site now, so I gues construction starts in about ten weeks. Construction on WTC Towers 2, 3 and 4 starts in eight weeks.

She's located on a superblock in the West Side, which is about a dozen blocks west of the Empire State Building. I don't know the street exactly, but this building isn't going to be alone. The area is zoned for extremely tall and big buildings (over 1,000 feet tall with over 2MSF of space). Across the street, another supertall is planned, and about six to ten more will follow. The area will make up the fourth largest CBD (Centeal Business Distric) in America: Largest CBSs: 1) Midtown Manhattan 2) Chicago Loop 3) Lower Manhattan 4) West Side superblocks The building's REAL name is the "GiraSole Tower," but it translates to "sunflower" according to the people from Italy at SSC. "Sunflower Tower" is much better and cuter, so that's what I call her. Off of Manhattan Island, this project by Richard Rogers, the SilverCup Towers, is my #1:  From the years 2008 to 2018, NYC will be building so many buildings over 600 feet tall that I bet there will be more than 150 of em! And at least ten new buildings over 1,000 feet tall will happen.

^I'm not a fan of those towers.... I find that style clunky and messy.
Are you a member of SSC? I'm a lurker in their Miami forum, lol.

I am, and I assumed that you were. Same name as here, too. I understand how they look messy, but they aren't really clunky. The smaller ones in the back look better because they don't look messy. Buildings that show structure like that are rare. We'll get more, I pray. Besides, this is Rogers, so it an't going to be bad. No building that firm made is bad.

Here's some skyscraper news that was just confirmed; don't know if I posted it before.
Meryl Lynch is going to build a $4 billion skyscraper on the Hotel Penn site. It will have trading floors and be 100% office.
I would expect it to be at least 1,100 feet tall to the roof, and much taller is possible.
[Keep in mind that the most expensive skyscraper currently in NYC is only about $3 billion, the Freedom Tower.]

This is crazy! I feel like we're in a second 1920's with all these skyscrapers going up...

According to not only me, but also development and planning experts, the tall building construction boom that NY will start to fully enter in 2008 will last to around 2020 and will be the largest building boom in NY's entire history, much larger than the boom that gaves us the Chrysler Building, 40 Wall Street, and the ESB.

I wonder if/when the bubble will burst. With as many projects going on in Miami, at least half of them are being pulled. Lenders are becoming more hesitant to loan the money for these towers, because the market is becoming so saturated. I wonder if that will happen with New York.

Manhattan really isn't influenced as easily, so I guess it's possible that we'll built until we can't build any more.
About 40 of the 50 states are building their tallest buildings.
America is on fire right now and building a lot more and a lot taller than most people would expect. Miami has to be the best example. America as a whole is building like never before. I don't think it will end anytime soon.

It's quite and interesting design. I've noticed how many towers these days don't seem to hide their structural elements. Look at how this tower seems to show off its supports!

Yeah, that's the best kind of building.
The Updated 1,000+ Club:
Freedom Tower - 1,776' Hudson North - 1,360' 200 Greenwich - 1,354' MSG Site Tower I - 1,340' 175 Greenwich Street - 1,255' Penn East Site - app. - 1,250' Empire State Building – 1,250’ Hudson South - 1,240' Hotel Drake Site Tower - app. 1,200' MoMA Tower – app. 1,200' Bank of America Tower 1,200' 80 South Street - 1,123' WestSide Centerpiece - 1,100+ (plus others) Merrill Lynch Tower (Penn site) – 1,100’+ MSG Site Tower II - 1,100' New York Times Tower - 1,046' Chrysler Building – 1,046’ Sunflower Tower – 1,000’+ Sherwood Tower - app. 1,000' Javits Center Hotel Prop - app. 1,000' 150 Greenwich – app. 1,000’
I know at least four on this list may not be built, but there's a lot that's missing, including an early elevation for a building that I've seen which is taller than the Fredom Tower, but it's too early to say if that's reality or not.
I can't wait. Only a little till we sart seeing lots going on at the Trade Center and maybe the Beekman Tower site too.
