The science of the Universe. It's pretty cool, but one of the most hotly contested issues is:
THE BIG BANG
I definitely have an opinion, but I'd like to hear what the public belief is first. Your thoughts?

Um yeah, it's bogus.
Even if there was a big bang, I would still believe that it was the work of God.

i know, me too! >.<' well, i'm pretty strong in my beliefs, but i'm under-researched on a lot of issues, so my main retaliation has become "BECAUSE I SAID SO!" i wish i was better at getting my point across. (at least i don't go yelling all over the place like our dear tori. XD jk &hearts

Now how do you interpret that? All I see in reference to the actual BEGINNING is "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" In fact, the six days described in Genesis come AFTER this event, and the Bible doesn't specify how long afterwards. Ever notice that? Or how about the fact that the earth is already there, complete with water and land underneath, with a sun (evening and morning were there before the sun was "created"). Interestingly, the Bible uses 2 DIFFERENT words when it says God "created" the sun and when He "created" the animals. When it says He "Created" the sun, moon, stars, etc., the word is an indefinite verb that can be more accurately translated "to show", or make visible, something that is already there. When it says he "made" the animals and man, it uses a DEFINITE verb that ALWAYS means "create something new that did not exist before". Interesting that the author chose two different words for those descriptions, isn't it?
Gap theory suggests that the time between the original creation (Genesis 1:1) and the beginning of recorded history (Genesis 1:2) is in fact quite large. Possibly even billions of years.
Why should we think that the universe is billions of years old? Look at the stars. Light propagates through space at a universal constant of roughly 186000 miles per second (2.9979x10^8 meters per second). Whenever we "look" at an object, we are just picking up the light reaching us from that object, so whenever we look at something we see it as it WAS when the light left it. The furthest galaxies we can SEE are 15 billion LIGHT YEARS away! That means that the light from those galaxies took 15 billion YEARS to get year. Since we can see these galaxies, we know that the universe MUST be AT LEASTR 15 billion years old.
One of the most common misconceptions about the Big Bang modle is that it states that the universe began by random chance. This is ridiculous. The Big Bang model traces the universe back to as close as 10^-34 seconds AFTER the big bang, but there exists NO natural explanation for the spontaneous controlled release of energy throughout space. The big bang wasn't an explosion, it was a PRECISELY tuned release of energy. If any factor of its origin had been off by a fraction of a percent, there would be no universe today. The big bang is one of the strongest evidences for God's existence we know of. In fact, the theory was proposed by a Jesuit priest!
Personally, I see the power, majesty, and creativity of God in the big bang. To think that the condensation of energy, the formation of matter, the first stars and movements of the galaxies and nebulae over billions of years all were brought together by God like a great orchestra just for US is really awesome. Christians shouldn't be so fast to reject the Standard Model just because it seems to violate their theological interpretation. It's a lot like the church's refusal to accept the fact that the earth was NOT the center of the universe, it tramples all over "accepted" doctrine, but it's fact and it doesn't violate the Bible at all. In fact, it only reveals God's majesty even more.
Oh yeah, and Tori: No, the Big Bang wasn't loud. Sound needs a medium through which to travel, so empty space just doesn't carry sound.

*doesn't read what allan says but assumes that it's in favor of the big bang and is scientifically/biblicly (ow, spelling murder ) correct* Basically, from my uneducated point of view- A really long time ago: God makes space go boom and stars and planets appear. A slightly more recent really long time ago: Gods creates the earth. (through asteroids and what have you, I have no idea how planets and stuff work) A slightly more recenter really long time ago: God creates little bacteria thingies. A long time ago: ZOMG US. *shrugs* That kind of veered off into evolution, but whatever. There's my short contributation. >.>

I really don't think Genesis 1 can be interpreted to support Evolution without stretching the text so far that its unrecognizable...

wow, apparently I have alot of bible verses and comments on this subject. Well maybe it was my evil twin.
I have to say
Big Bang = Crap
sounds like something a deranged 8 year old boy would say
"hehe and then all the planets crashed into each other and there was this gigantic explosion with lots of fire hehe....I like explosions, and blood....and fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Well, I can't really debate biblical texts, but i'm just saying what makes sense to me. >_> I can't really see the whole Garden of Eden stuff happening. I'm sorry, it's just...logical. Those texts can be taken as parable, anyway.
Nina, mocking the other side doesn't really make you look very mature. -_-
"omg, this dude just snapped his fingers and all this crap happened!?? dude thatz liek retarded!!!!"
Oversimplification can be applied anyway, it doesn't help your argument.
