The only thing the Crown Prince of Dubai is concerned about is besting the City of New York, every American city and state, and every city that has anything bigger, better, or taller than his city has. The top .5% of their population holds 97% of the wealth and is responsible for all the construction. They are building a city the size of NY, and expecting every skyscraper to be fulled in a few years. I'm going to have fun laughing when their economy crashes.
The world's tallest [put any noun in here and Dubai has/will have it]. The world's biggest [put any noun in here and Dubai has/will have it].
It's not just buildings; they have to have the biggest and best everything. Do you have any idea how much the workers (most of which are forced to work there) who are buildings their projects get paid? It's less than 4 dollars a day, and no, it's definitely not enough to lead a comfortable life. What really pisses me off is that people see all of this, and what do they do? They consider it to be America's downfall. They make fun of NY and Chicago for not being as active in terms of construction and idolize Dubai. NY and Chicago have been building skyscrapers for OVER 100 YEARS. A show-off city like that will never even come close.
Dubai - A wannabee New York. A bunch of show-offs who like to build tall buildings and pretend that they have power because they happen to have very tall buildings. Does London have very tall buildings? Not really. Does New York? Yes, but it also has character and the folks that built it at least had freedom, and people from a certain Mideastern country called "Israel" are at least free to visit and live in New York - which is more than can be said for Showoff City - excuse me, Dubai.
Idiot: Wow, look at that, the tallest building in the world is going up in Dubai. Me: Yeah, because someone in there has the world's most over-inflated ego.
End. Let's never talk about the city again.

DUDE WHY DO YOU PEOPLE KNOW THIS STUFF. It's really interesting to some people, Joy. I mean, honestly, do you not think that half the world's population would not read through the Harry Potter thread and have the same reaction? Honestly, I find it fascinating, and so does Ebola.

Well, I can't vouch for the government, but as a tourist attraction, I have to admit a few things there (like the luxurious hotels, beaches and indoor ski resorts) seem appealing,

Everyone seems to be "OMGZOR, DUBAI IS TEH SH*TZ LAWLZ!!!" Get educated; they may have money, but they fundamentally enslave all the foreign workers there, one of the main elements to their success. Most of these people leave their homeland, typically India, to find work where they couldn't, and then they arrive and find that it is worse than their original country, but they can't go home because they depleted their savings trying to buy a new life, and the laws there prevent them from doing anything, including striking for their own rights and higher pay. People need to read about it first before they decide that they want to spend their family vacation there. These workers assemble at worksites out of sight of tourists. US State Department reports on worldwide human trafficking fault the UAE and other Gulf states for labor abuses, like withholding pay and passports. "You have to work 365 days a year, no days off."

Most of these people leave their homeland, typically... to find work where they couldn't, and then they arrive and find that it is worse than their original country, but they can't go home because they depleted their savings trying to buy a new life... Doesn't this describe the 1900's American immigrants plight to a tee? And as I recall, most of them were in NYC... Sorry, I'm not defending Dubai, just saying their labor system is not unique.

Immigrants to NYC always had more rights than workers there will ever have. Aside from intolerance from certain members of society, I'm sure they got everything everyone else got. The main difference is the immigrant workers in Dubai have no freedom to go when they want to go because they are not treated as equals. (Muslims and Hindus really don't mix well.) I bet the workers building the ESB, over 75 years ago durning a depression, got paid more money than workers in Dubai are getting paid curently. d**n it, no matter what, every thread about NYC or Chicago skyscrapers always someshow gets turned into some sort of comparison with Dubai. I should have seen it coming. Talking about Dubai should be banned from this site and every site that has anything to do wih NY.

They started construction on Tower 1 a year ago. Construction on everything else starts in 5 months. 7WTC has been rebuilt and is 1 year old. Tower 1 will beging to literally rise in a few months. Two of its 4 tower cranes are erected. Each one of the towers will have 4 tower cranes.

The lower levels of the base is what's being built now. The new 7WTC was completed a long time ago. The old 7WTC was destroyed on 9/11; my dad built it.
